HIV education aimed at black men who have sex with men

Cleveland-The AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland announces it will begin a new program, called Brother 2 Brother, to reach African American men who have sex with men in the Cleveland area.

Robert K. Burns, who will be working with Brother 2 Brother, expressed optimism about the program's potential.

"I look forward to the initiation of this endeavor," Burns said. "I think it will allow us to provide more and better pre-

vention education for a community which is becoming increasingly at risk for HIV and AIDS. Many African Americans have already felt the impact of the epidemic, and it's important that we stress safer sex and the socioeconomic issues that face the African American community."

"Men who have sex with men" includes men who do not necessarily identify themselves as gay, along with gay and bisexual

men.

Currently, African American men account for 51.8 percent of total AIDS cases in the region, and the highest reported risk factor for African American males (55.7 percent of the subtotal) was male-male

sex.

While African American and Hispanic men who have sex with men combined make up less than 12 percent of Cuyahoga County's male population,

members of these racial groups make up the majority of malemale sex AIDS cases. The majority of cases are in the 25-39 age group.

"I think that if more programs like Brother 2 Brother were available years

ago, I may have not become infected with HIV," said Ramiz Ware, an African American man living with the virus.

The goal of the Brother 2 Brother program is to increase HIV risk reduction behavior among African American men who have sex with men through an integrated series of interventions that will increase HIV risk reduction skills.

Some of the program interventions involve direct education within the community, as well as one-toone sessions. The program also has a capacity building component in which technical assistance will be provided to community-based organizations serving the African American community.

OF GREATER CLEVELAND

Adolescent and young adult males make up three percent of the men who have sex with men cases, but a further analysis of AIDS cases indicates a disturbing reality: Over 90 percent of male cases among young people aged 13-24 are linked to male-male sex.

For more information on Brother 2 Brother programs, or to volunteer to assist in education, contact Robert Burns at 216-621-0766.

monthly Gray Pride meeting and the national observance of Seniors Day has given reason for a special event.

The Gray Pride task force has combined energies with the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center to arrange a special potluck celebrat-

ing our elders. The entire gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is invited to bring food to share and participate in a time of communicating with and celebrating the rich lives, achievements and the ferocious tenacity of the elders of our family.

The event and remember that for this one time only, you don't have to be old-will be held at the Women's Pavilion in Lakewood Park from 6 pm to 9 pm on May 18. The park is on the Lake Erie shore, just north of the intersection of Lake Rd. and Belle Ave., on the Number 55 RTA bus line.

So get out the pasta box and the minimarshmallow bag, create a wonderful dish [the eating kind] and prepare to party.
